India’s daily avg. electricity use in May down 10.4% from April

India’s average daily electricity use fell 10.4% in May compared to April, according to a Reuters analysis of Government data. This is primarily due to states across the country imposing restrictions to contain the COVID-19 second wave.

Average power generation fell to 3.6 billion units (BU) in May, compared to 4 BU in April. Average consumption is usually the highest in May as it is peak summer season.

Power consumption grows 8.2% in May YOY

India’s power consumption saw a 8.2% year-on-year growth in May at 110.47 billion units (BU), indicating a slow recovery in commercial and industrial demand as compared to May 2020, when India was under a strict lockdown.

Cyclones hitting the west and east coasts of the country also resulted in power outages and reduced consumption during peak summer months.
