India’s power consumption grows 41% YOY in April

Power consumption grew 41% to 119.27 billion units (BU) in April 2021, over the same month last year, indicating increased industrial and commercial activity as compared to period during the national lockdown last year.

Peak power demand met, which is the highest supply in a day, touched 182.55GW. A growth of 38% over the peak power demand met in the year ago period.


Average spot power price up 53% to Rs 3.70/unit in April at IEX

The average spot power price rose by nearly 53% to Rs 3.70/unit in April at the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX), primarily due to the increased demand as compared to the same period last year. The price stood at Rs 2.42/unit in April 2020.

“The day-ahead market (DAM) traded 5,699 MU (million units) volume in April, 2021 achieving a significant 54 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth,” an IEX statement said.
