Coronavirus crisis: DISCOMs will require subsidies amounting to Rs. 1 lakh crore in 2020-21

Subsidy requirement of power DISCOMs is likely to rise to Rs. 1 lakh crore in 2020-21. According to ICRA, the revenue gap has been increasing due to the decline in sales to commercial and industrial consumers who have halted operations because of the ongoing lockdown.

The subsidy dependence is likely to go up depending on how the lockdown and subsequent measures to limit the spread of the virus play out.

ICRA estimates that the book loss level for DISCOMs is likely to increase by Rs 20,000cr for all India.


Energy efficiency measures saved India Rs. 89,122 crore in 2018-19

India saved Rs. 89,122 crore due to energy efficiency initiatives in 2018-19, according to a report released by the Ministry of Power. Energy intensity also dropped 20% compared to that in 2005. India has set a target of reducing the energy intensity by 33-35% by 2030 as compared to the 2005 level.

Energy intensity is defined as units of energy expended per unit of GDP.
