India’s Industrial production rises 3.6% in October

According to the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) data, the manufacturing sector registered a growth of 3.5% while the electricity generation sector registered a growth of 11.2%.

Industrial production as a whole grew by 3.6% in October, primarily on account of better performance of the above two sectors.

The IIP had contracted by 6.6% in October 2019.


Electricity subsidies increased 32% since FY 2016

An independent report by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) has found that direct tariff electricity subsidies have increased 32% from FY 2016, amounting to Rs 1,10,391 crore in FY 2019.

The report also estimates that ‘cross-subsidies’ were worth another Rs 75,027 crore in FY 2019 bringing the total subsidies to Rs 1,85,418 crore.

The study also stated that 25 out of the 31 states and union territories failed to meet the requirements of the UDAY scheme to reduce AT&C losses to 15% with only Delhi, Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh hitting the target.
