Weekly Power Sector Round up: 9th January 2021

DISCOMs’ outstanding dues to power GENCOs rise 35% to Rs 1.41 lakh cr

Total outstanding dues owed to power generation companies by DISCOMs rose 35% to Rs 1.41 lakh crore in November 2020, as compared to Rs 1.04 lakh crore in November 2019. This, according to the PRAAPTI portal.

The total overdue amount, that is the amount not cleared within the 45 day grace period, stood at Rs 1.3 lakh crore as against Rs 0.93 lakh crore a year ago.

Ever increasing dues indicate the poor health of the sector.

Average spot power price falls 3% to Rs 2.83/unit in December

Average spot power price fell 3% year-on-year to Rs 2.83 per unit in December 2020, the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) said. Trades of 5,606 million units (MU) were executed, a growth of 29% y-o-y in volume in the day-ahead market.

The total sell bids at 10,814 MU were almost double that of the cleared volume, implying plenty of availability but lack of buyers for the power. This, consequently, led to the attractive average market clearing price of Rs 2.83 per unit.
